If your water contains anything more than 7-10 grains per gallon of hardness, it is considered hard and a softener is recommended. In order to make the water soft (which means less streaking on glass and plumbing fixtures, softer hair after showering) you will require a water softener.

Iron & Sulphur Units
After your water test, it may be determined that your water contains hydrogen sulfide gas and is producing an unpleasant rotten egg odor when you run your water. If your fixtures (sinks/faucets) have red staining, this likely indicates the presence of iron.
Tip: Remove the lid on the back of your toilet tank. This is a good place to check the quality of your country water. If the lid and tank are black in color – chances are you require a sulphur unit. If the color is red, you may require an iron unit. At Honest D Plumbing we supply a Novo unit which encompasses both issues, iron & sulphur. Our water test will take the guesswork out and provide a comprehensive reading of all minerals contained in your water.
Our clients in the country will often opt for the combination of softener and sulphur unit to obtain optimal water experience within their homes. Both iron/sulphur and water softeners can run independently of one another but most times are used in combination with each other.
